The GC can ask for changes in the field, but the contract may say you only get paid if the paperwork is perfect first.
Why it matters
Millwork changes are expensive. Field dimensions shift, finishes change, hardware gets substituted, and schedule pressure makes verbal approvals tempting.
No extra or changed work will be compensated unless authorized by a fully executed change order before the work starts.
Written field direction or email approval preserves Subcontractor's right to time and compensation while formal change-order paperwork is completed.
Can we add a field-friendly change path so written direction from the GC team preserves pricing and schedule rights while the formal change order catches up?
Escalate if the job is fast-moving, changes are likely, or the clause requires work to proceed before price, scope, or time impact is resolved.
